Ayumi Hamasaki is a Japanese pop singer born October 2, 1978 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Commonly known just as Ayu, Ayumi Hamasaki is one of the most popular and influential Japanese pop singers and Japanese idols, considered one of the biggest J-pop artists.

Since her debut in 1998 with her first single "poker face", she has sold more than 46 million copies, with the releases of her seven full-length studio albums, one mini-album, two compilation albums, 40 singles, and several non-studio albums, being the fourth top selling Japanese artist in the history of Japan. With the release of BLUE BIRD, Hamasaki's single sales have passed the 20 million mark, making her the first solo and female singer to do so.

With the release of her 39th single "Startin' / Born To Be..." in 2006, Hamasaki became the first female singer to have 26 singles #1 singles (the most #1 singles a Japanese female artist has ever achieved) and 37 singles in the Top 10 of the Japanese Oricon charts. She is also the first Japanese artist to have her first original seven studio albums top the charts.

Ayumi has also won the golden prize on the Japan Record Taishou (the most important award in Japanese music) three times in a row, in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She would also win it in 2004, but she rejected the award saying she doesn't want her song INSPIRE to win an award.

Grasshopper Takes a Jab at Ayumi Hamasaki for Lip-syncing

Yesterday, at their "Grasshopper Forever Collection Autograph Concert", the trio performed their hit "Forever" and as the music started, Grasshopper's Choi Yat Ji stated in front of a crowd of thousands, "Don't think we are lip-syncing, we are not like those from another country [Ayumi Hamasaki], we are the real deal."

Afterwards, Choi Yat Ji was asked whether the news of Ayumi allegedly lip-syncing prompted him to make that statement on stage, he said, "I saw the news when I returned from vacation yesterday. The opening of our song had some background vocals and I did not want the audience to think we were lip-syncing." He further states that he did not see Ayumi in concert, but as an experienced dancing singer, there is no way to dance on stage for 30 minutes and not have heavy breathing. He says, "When a singer is singing and dancing live, their live singing is bound to be different from their CD version, and there is bound to be breathing sounds. The breathing is a sign of a hard working performance and not a sign of a singer not having enough air. This is live!"

Eason Chan "Settles" With Ayumi Hamasaki

Earlier, Eason Chan openly criticized Ayumi Hamasaki for lip-syncing at her concert, but never would he have thought his words would bring such stress to Ayumi nor would they become headline news. Picutres of Ayumi getting drunk and acting out of character were taken, allegedly due to Eason's comments.

After a promotional event yesterday, Eason admits that he has a big mouth and what he says can affect many people, but he emphasizes that he did not intentionally say those words to hurt anyone. But if in fact it was his words that affected Ayumi's behavior then he is deeply embarrassed.

Reports have it that he openly criticized Ayumi to make headlines, so he can use the "fame" to debut in the Japanese music industry. Hearing this, Eason was utterly shocked. He says, "It was not intentional. If I have to use this type of news to gain fame, it would not be dignified and I'd rather not have the fame. I don't want to say things to hurt other people but if what I said did hurt others, then I must say I am deeply embarrassed. If I were to enter the Japanese industry, I would enter solely as a singer and not as headline news."

Eason was then asked whether he will publicly apologize to Ayumi, he says, "I don't have to do it publicly, I've already personally explained it to Ayumi. During my time with EEG, Avex [Ayumi's record company] helped produce my Mandarin albums so I've already personally explained to Avex's president that it was not intentional and I didn't know it would become such a big problem. But I don't know if he passed it along."

@ Kat-san: I suppose many artists lip sync especially when they dance at the same time. Tama nga naman, nakakapagod din talaga yung simultaneous ang song and dance. Singers do that all the time e, but I guess fans do feel 'betrayed' sometimes kung malaman nilang hindi pala live kumanta ang idol nila. Hehe
