Two New Albums from Orange Range

Five years after they debuted, popular Okinawan rock band Orange Range are to release their first greatest hits collection. They will put out two albums, the singles collection "Orange" and an album of fan favorites "Range", on July 27. They will also release a new single, "Ikenai Taiyo", a week earlier on July 18. A former indie band, Orange Range made the major label debut with Sony Music in 2003. It was their second single, "Shanghai Honey", that made the breakthrough, selling over 350,000 copies. Within two and a half years, they had broken the 10-million-copy barrier. To date their 15 singles have sold some 6.5 million and their four albums over 5.5 million. Even in a market that has seen big declines in CD slaes, a Sony spokesman said they hope to sell a combined six million copies of the new albums.

Orange Range (Okinawa)
Okinawa, Japan's most exotic and southernmost prefecture, has produced more than its fair share of pop musicians over the last decade. Amuro Namie, Speed, and Hajime Chitose, to name just a few. In 2004, six-man pop-rock unit Orange Range "arrived" in style to become the latest addition to the lineup. They won that year's New Artist of the Year accolade at the 18th annual Japan Gold Disc Awards. They joined the illustrious list of Okinawan artists to have taken the award: Kiroro (1999), Da Pump (1998), Speed (1997), and Begin (1991). In spring 2005 they won again at the Gold Disc Awards, their combined CD sales from the previous year putting them at the top of the pile: a whopping 4.5 million singles and albums earned them the Artist of the Year award.

The six members -- Hiroki (Mid Vox), Naoto (g.), Yoh (b.), Yamato (High Vox), Ryo (Low Vox) and Katchan (dr.) -- have known each other since childhood, growing up together in Okinawa City. They started playing music together at a junior high school graduation, forming a group in 2001. Within a year, they had already played 70 gigs at the many live houses around Okinawa. The fact that the majority of the US military in Japan is based in Okinawa means that there is a quite different social mix than on the mainland. This applies to music too, with a lot of rock, blues, and hip hop mixing with local traditional music. Orange range reflect this mish-mash of influences and play anything from pop to rock to hip hop. They borrow heavily from other sources, part of the game in western music, but less common in Japan.

With a growing local fan base, they released a mini-album, "Orange Ball," with indie label Spice Records on 22/2/2002, presumably a fortuitous date of some kind. Playing the summer festivals in 2003, they held their own with established acts and were picked up by major label Sony, who no doubt were hoping to cash in on the Okinawan music boom. But group leader Hiroki insists, "I express the words and music with no influence from Okinawan music. It comes out naturally from inside me."

Their major label debut album Musiq proved that the message was reaching a lot of people, selling over 2.4 million copies and producing four No.1 singles. Their first hit from the album was Michishirube - a road home, which was used on the Fuji TV drama Fire Boys. They also had songs in a movie (Ima Aini Ikimasu), anime shows (Naruto, Bleach) and a TV commercial (soft drink Match). Such commercial tie-ups virtually guarantee hit status for a song.

The group found a new kind of status at the end of 2004. Their hometown of Okinawa City was heading into its 30th anniversary and was looking for a good promo event to mark the occasion. Orange Range's appearance on NHK's traditional New Year's Eve song spectacular Kouhaku Uta Gassen (Red vs White Song Contest) was broadcast live to the country from downtown Okinawa. Orange Range were on top of their game.

ORANGE RANGE is one of the most popular rock/pop/r&b groups from Japan. Band members: Hiroki, Yamato and Ryo (all three in vocals), Naoto (Guitar), Yoh (Bass), Katchan (Drums, left in July 2005).

They've released 4 full albums (Including the Remix album Squeezed), 1 mini-album and 13 singles since 2002. Their second album MusiQ was their breakthrough hit. Also their single Hana sold over 661,000 copies in less than two months. Their music has also been used in a few anime (Naruto, Bleach) and in few TV shows (including the American movie, Fantastic Four).

July 2005, right in the verge of releasing their 12th single, Kizuna, Katchan (founding member and drummer of the band) left the band due to a tendonitis in his pinkie finger and also because of creative differences. His place has yet to be filled.

Clothing: Aside from ORANGE RANGE's music, the band has teamed up with T&C Surf Designs twice already to form the "TownandRange" clothing line. The first campaign took place last year 2005 (around August, and went into the fall) and ORANGE RANGE used "GOD69" as the T&C CM Song. The second campaign started this year 2006 (around March, and is still going on) and ORANGE RANGE used "Walk on" as the T&C CM Song.

delofamilia, the solo project of NAOTO from ORANGE RANGE, will be debuting with an album on 2007.12.5. It is currently unknown whether it'll be NAOTO himself or as a group with others and what sort of music he/they will bring. But it'll be an interesting release to look forward to.

Orange Range will be coming out with two theme songs to kick off the New Year. The first for Fuji TV for the drama “Loss: Time: Life” which begins on January 6th. The song titled “kimi station” will be released on March 5th and is a love ballad composed by member NAOTO (24).
