Your BENTO pictures!
Actually, sushi refers to vinegared rice -- not the roll itself. ^_^ Kaya yung chirashi zushi ay "scattered sushi rice". Yun namang maki-zushi ay 'rolled rice'. Basta ganun.

The smiling onigiri has longanisa bits inside)

Re: The BENTO Thread
I made another bento using longganisa. Instead of fying the longganisa as is, I took the meat out of the casing and form them into very small patties about the size of a 10-peso coin. The carbs are from the onigiri (cubes and balls) and from the sardine spaghetti. The rest of the bento are stuff I have in the ref.

Re: The BENTO Thread
This is my first bento ever ... so it deserves a post ... hehehehehe

I ate this for lunch at home and I used left over food like ma-ling luncheon meat for the stem. This bento is supposed to be flowers (pork siomai and tamagoyaki) and nori for the leaves and placed on top of lots of white rice ... parang pang grade one na art hehehehehehe ... too bad I don't have a cute bento ... so I just used our lock and lock containers ...

Re: The BENTO Thread
Was finally able to use my Hello Kitty onigiri molds and come up with a Hello Kitty-themed bento! Each onigiri is really small, about 2 inches across.
Onigiri is plain rice (no salt, filling, etc) decorated with nori (eyes, mouth, whiskers), red bell pepper (ribbon, flower) & takuan (Kitty's nose).
Main dish (in the pink cup) is hotdog & onions sauteed in ketchup (from a Japanese recipe book). Side dish is (in the green cup) iridofu decorated with green bell pepper flowers. Tofu and scrambled egg, also from a Japanese book. Others are bacon-wrapped hotdog ball, takuan slices, broccoli, sweet peas & Chinese tapa slices. The box is lined with lettuce leaves for added color and nutrients.

Re: The BENTO Thread
waaah kasi nainggit ako sa bento ni maneki_neko-san kaya I'm post my second bento that I made this week
I'm trying to portion my rice intake so I measured 1 cup rice ... I used my mom's kitchen-aid measuring cup and when I inverted the cup with rice, that's when I realized it formed a circle and I placed peas for the eyes and mouth
the main dish on the left side of the picture is purefoods sisig (from the can), I sauteed some onions and removed it from pan, then I fried the sisig from the can until the juice dried up and poured 1 beated egg over it, i retured the oinion in the pan mix it up until the egg is cooked
the side dish on the right side of the bento is mixed veggies: baby corn, carrots, mushroom and green peas that are steamed and mixed with herbed butter ...
oh, and I still used my lock&lock bento box ... I'm still trying to check other bento sets kaya lang some are really expensive or too small or are not microwavable ...
@maneki_neko-san, I saw the silicon cups you mentioned, I was really tempted to buy kaya lang sobra talaga mahal ...maybe I'll check out hatchin next time ... or maybe I'll buy a bento box with separators built in na ... may nakita ako na lock&lock na ganito ...

Re: The BENTO Thread

I sauteed carrot sticks and asparagus in olive oil then seasoned with salt and pepper.
I have another hotdog ball (because I made lots in one batch). The spaces are filled in by broccoli, takuan (yellow pickled radish) and boiled okra. That yellow ball in the front is quail egg simmered in curry powder.
The fried rice is garnished with green and red bell pepper flowers -- the same ones as the Hello Kitty bento. Again, I got carried away with making the flowers so I made lots to store in the fridge.

April 13th, 2009, 12:15 AM #10

this is my third bento
if you will notice, medyo pareho sila nung second bento ko kasi I made them the same week ... but this time, I was really interested in experimenting with colored rice that's why my rice is yellow ...
I used ground turmeric (McCormick brand), it said in the label to mix 1/8 teaspoon to 1 cup rice and that's what I did. the rice had a nutty smell and flavor after adding the turmeric and a nice golden yellow color ...
my main course was toasted corned beef, which I fried until it almost burned to a crisp and then I still had some herbed buttered veggies but this time I added brocolli (my fave veggie) and zucchini to the mix of veggies ...
no new bento for the month of April, but I still have some bentos from march that I haven't posted yet ...Last edited by yammy-chan; April 13th, 2009 at 12:19 AM.
