Japanese actress-singer Erika Sawajiri’s latest single under the stage name Erika has entered the Oricon chart at No.1, making her the only female artist to have their first three releases top the chart. The song "Destination Nowhere" has also been chosen as the theme for the late-night TV Asahi drama "Mop Girl", due to start on October 12.

The popular actress, whose mother is French-Algerian, is also a fashion leader for young women. She went for a twist on the traditional look on Sunday, wearing a rose-themed kimono to a PR event for her upcoming movie "Closed Note", which opens in theaters on September 29.

Sawajiri made her recording debut last year with the hit single "Taiyou no Uta", from the drama of the same name, but using the stage name Kaoru Amane. In July, she switched to her own first name and had another hit with "Free", making her only the second female singer to start with consecutive No.1 singles, and the first since top idol Yakushimaru Hiroko (43) in 1983. The circle of coincidence is complete if you remember that Yakushimaru played the mother to Sawajiri's heroine in her breakthrough drama "1 Littoru no Namida" (1 Litre of Tears) in 2005.

The young actress has also found time for romance with a wealthy older IT entrepreneur.

On the 24th of September, actress Sawajiri Erika (21) appeared at the live broadcast of TOKYO FM's "Wonderful World" at the Shibuya studio in Tokyo. "Wonderful World" broadcasts live on Mondays to Fridays,7PM.

It was her first visit to the studio and Sawajiri promoted her photo book "ERIKA2007". Stylishly dressed in a leopard-print camisole, Sawajiri posed in front of her booth, waved and smiled at the passing fans. The photo book, which was released on August 29th, was shot and produced entirely in Europe. Sawajiri says her favorite location was Dubrovnik in Croatia. "It was so beautiful. Actress Sawajiri Erika (21) attended the PR event at the opening day of her starring movie, 'Closed Note' (Director: Yukisada Isao) at Tokyo's Yuurakucho. The actress appeared to be in a sullen mood at the event.

 Actress Sawajiri Erika(21) is one of several major celebrities doing damage control in the last couple of days. In Sawajiri's case it follows harsh criticism of her recent grumpy behavior.

On her official website today, she issued a statement formally apologizing to fans and organizers of last Friday's PR even for her new movie. While on stage before the screening she appeared sorely pissed off about something, kept her arms folded, and gave only brief and testy replies to questions.

In her statement, she acknowledged her bad behavior and that she had "betrayed" her fans, and vowed to learn from the experience.

Over the weekend, her attitude was criticized as unprofessional and she was slammed by self-appointed showbiz watchdog Wada Akiko (57). She said it had reinforced her image as a self-centered "jo-sama" or movie queen.

Sorry, I am in an Erika mode right now. Gusto ko kasi syang artista talaga, tapos lately ang dami kong nababasa sa kanya. Then I saw the Oricon article about her, and she looked really bratty so I translated the article to find out what it meant. Ayun pala, bratty nga siya talaga. Hehehe.

The lady second from right is Takeuchi Yuko, from the movie Ima Ai ni Yukimasu and the series Lunch no Joou. Ex-wife of Nakamura Shido (aka Ryuk's voice actor in the Death Note movies and anime series). ^_^

Early on Tuesday, actress Erika Sawajiri issued an apology on her official website for her unprofessional conduct this past weekend. She showed up at a PR event for the opening of her new movie, "Closed Note," but she was visibly upset about something and spoke only three brief sentences during the event. The incident reinforced her negative reputation as "Erika-sama" and drew sharp criticism from the media, other celebrities, and fans.

The actress was vague regarding the reasons for her attitude, but she acknowledged her lack of professionalism and admitted she had betrayed her fans. She also recognized that just an apology would not end the matter, so she plans to make amends for it in the future. Hoping to clear any doubt, her agency asserted that Sawajiri herself had formed the contents of the letter.

"Closed Note" is screening at the Pusan International Film Festival, which opens on the 4th. Sawajiri was scheduled to walk the red carpet with director Isao Yukisada for the opening ceremony and to appear at the film's showing on the 6th. But due to the incident (which reportedly caused the movie's website to temporarily shut down after a flood of comments), her agency and Toho decided to cancel her appearance. Yukisada, however, will still attend as planned.

Meanwhile, one of Sawajiri's responses ("betsu ni...") during the PR event has become somewhat of a catchphrase among her critics.
