The image of Otaku-- what 'ya think?

For the past few days, I've been researching on the history of the word itself. I've seen the negative stereotype people have on otakus and on one hand, some people protect them or are proud of it.

I just like to know your opinion on the image of otaku. Please vote!

What is the image of an otaku for you?

Can't decide din. Kasi outside of Japan, the term otaku seems cool. They wear the term proudly like a badge. Sa Japan naman, nandidiri sila sa otaku. Naisip ko naman, kasi baka lost in translation lang. Parang sa labas kasi ng Japan, otaku means someone who likes anime and manga, when in fact, it means something a little worse. Personally though, I don't consider myself an otaku ^_^

Yun nga lang ang problema, pag yung mga anime aficionados, pumunta ng Japan...then they start referring themselves as 'otaku' rather than 'Anime ga suki desu', magiging nega agad ang tingin ng mga tao sa kanila...oh well...as long as we know the distinction, and how/when to use the term, I suppose it should be ok. Pero pano nga pala kung hindi? Hehe.

Re: The image of Otaku-- what 'ya think?

So please clarify matters for us...

Kse nga para sa outsiders like us OTAKU simply means a fanatic...maybe a nerd or a geek...which actually has the same connotation naman. But minsan kse certain words have a very different connotation culturally tulad na lang ng Spanish word na "conio"  sa atin ngayon when someone calls you "conio" it means sosyal ka, may pera or classy. Whereas, it's actually a derogatory word in Spanish times...meaning bobo or tanga.

Kaya, can you please tell exactly how the Japanese perceive otakus...I also noticed that sa Ouran eh...ang weird nga ng reaction nila when they perceive Renge as an otaku.Confused

The word "IMPOSSIBLE" has no place in my dictionary.

Re: The image of Otaku-- what 'ya think?

Otaku derives from the kanji of "House" which much like is western counterpart "fanatic" Latin's root which is also "house". Ontologically, they mean being possed by an obssesion towards something that sometimes the obssesion is detrimental to one's health or wellbeing or the society in general.

Generally, otaku is not a term that is ostracized or anything. It is just one among the many epithets the Japanese call the subcultures within their seemingly "homogeneous" culture. Japanese really like to categorize things as well as people into groups and may not particularly habour any sentiments towards groups. Its just another way of looking at the world and things. Other word related to groupings are the -kei and -zoku. It is really on the personal realm when you express your sentiments towards the groupings.

Also, saying just otaku is incomplete in itself. There should be a noun identifier. So you could say, manga otaku,  etc. Japanese are aware of this but most of the time they collectively call the male Akihabara-kei populace "otaku" only because they are the most ubiquitous and a strong market for specialized services. People outside Japan may have construde that definition only and neglected the real umbrella term it really denotes.

Bottom line, "otaku" is just a classification and expression of sentiments towards groupings are ,I deem, irrelevant. Everything is in the sphere of personal preference. You decide whether you would flame or praise people under the category.

Re: The image of Otaku-- what 'ya think?

I forgot to mention, being a manga/anime Otaku for Japanese is not just being in "Anime/Manga ga daisuki" mode. It is more than that. It is like a encompassing passion towards your obssesion. It means you eat, breathe, live, manga/anime. You know all the details about the production company, the storyline, the seiyuus, merchandise and all plethora of trivia about your obssesion. So outsider references of otaku has watered down the whole image the word denotes. The Japanese are very meticulous people and I believe that is expressed by the otaku subculture.

Adding on to what I said earlier also, there are a lot of otakus. There can be trainline otaku, gravure idol otaku, bento otaku, things like that. Anyone that displays unhealthy to most common standards obssession about a thing is called an  (something)  otaku.

Re: The image of Otaku-- what 'ya think?

Well, generally for me it's not a big deal kung ang isang fan ay otaku o hindi. Ako, I'm neither an anime or J-pop afficionado but I like other Japanese stuff so much that sometimes parang otaku na rin ako.

Nakakayamorotskots din kasi yung sobrang (I really mean it, SOBRA) kahibangan sa isang bagay. Hindi rin maganda sa kalusugan. So just like any other things, take it moderately.

    Welcome to Japinoy.com, rayleonard-san.

Otaku refers to a person who has obsession with anime and manga. Pero minsan ang otaku pwede rin mahilig sa computer, games, idols, etc. Meron pang isang word sa Japanese na otaku. Ito yung "your house." Pero sa thread na ito, ang otaku yung taong mahilig sa anime/manga/games. Pero through the years I think starting from the 80s, na-bubuild up ang stereotype sa mga otaku. Minsan naging synonymous sila sa words na loner or anti-social, nerd minsan nagiging pervert. Kaya ito ang pinag-uusapan sa thread kasi ibang tao may iba't-ibang view ng otaku. Depende na rin kasi kung nasaang bansa ka-- Japan, US o Pilipinas.

He was just executed this week (today pa nga ata, di lang ako sure). Nabasa ko ang sa internet. Tapos yun nga, puro bata pa ang biktima nya. People said he further tarnished the otaku image with the murders he committed....pag otaku kasi, siguro mandidiri ang iba. Pero yung ginawa nya, naging nakakatakot pa ang image ng mga otaku.
