Ken Chu to co-produce a movie in the Philippines

    By Marinel Cruz
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    First Posted 20:28:00 04/10/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Two Asian actors are on board for filmmaker Adolf Alix’s new project.

Taiwanese superstar Ken Chu, who starred in Alix’s film “Batanes,” has agreed to co-produce the director’s next movie, which is about the plight of Filipino soldiers assigned in the Spratly Islands.

“We were in Batanes when I talked to Ken about the concept. He got back to me recently and said he has convinced other Chinese producers to invest in the new film,” Alix told Inquirer Entertainment on Tuesday.

The film, titled “Kalayaan,” will star Lao-Australian actor Ananda Everingham in the lead role. He appeared in the 2004 horror film, “Shutter.”

“Kalayaan” also features Filipino actors Joem Bascon and Arnold Reyes.

“We are currently in the process of securing permits. We hope to start filming soon,” said Alix.

    source: ABS-CBN

With the successful airing of the original Hana Kimi on ABS-CBN, Taiwanese heartthrob Wu Chun recently revealed on his personal online journal his intentions to visit the Philippines. “I'm happy that they have started airing ‘Hana Kimi.’ I am really trying my best to convince my company to do promotional activities in the Philippines,” Wu said in his blog.

Though his initial attempt to convince his managers failed, the 28-year-old singer-actor remains persistent to achieve his goal and very much determined to see his Filipino fans. “I will not give up and hope it will be a reality for all us to meet up one day,” he added.

Don’t miss the exciting happenings this week as Joey (Ella Chen), being the fastest runner in the entire school, gets into trouble when the rival team kidnaps her so she can’t participate in the intramurals. Brian (Wu Zun), on the other hand, becomes jealous of Tristan’s (Danson Tang) closeness to Joey. Joey doesn’t have single clue why Brian got mad at her and little did she know that her ultimate crush already knows that she is a girl.

Will Brian finally admit what he knows and tell Joey how he really feels? Find out the answers weekdays on the original Hana Kimi, after Naruto on ABS-CBN's Hapon-tastic!

    Se7en: LA preview party

Se7en, who is scheduled to release his debut album in the US, is going to perform in his Verizon-sponsored preview party in Los Angeles, which is unlike the preview party he had in New York last March where he just introduced his songs.

Se7en is holding the preview party in the famous club “Highlands” on May 2. In the said event, he is planned to perform the R&B song “Money Can’t Buy Me Love,” which was composed by 1TYM’s Teddy, “You Got Me,” featuring Three 6 Mafia and “Girls,” which was produced by Darkchild, who will also be there in the event. Far East Movement and Three 6 Mafia will also have special performances before Se7en goes up on stage.

People from major recording labels like Interscope, Jive and Sony and BET officials are going to attend the event, which is said to be an important stage for Se7en for his US debut. Even Blackeyed Peas’ member and producer Will.I.AM, “Boyz N The Hood” director John Singleton and Amerie are also said to go to the preview party.

Meanwhile, 1TYM member Teddy and YG Entertainment’s big boss Yang Hyun Suk are leaving Korea on May 1 to attend the party.

I listen to both Kpop and Cpop(a bit). From the two, I favor Kpop an ample degree more than Cpop.

My favorite artists would be TVXQ, Zhang Li Yin, Super Junior, TSZX The Grace, Girls Generation, BoA, Big Bang, FT Island, Younha, Wonder Girls, Ajoo etc.

What was Se7en doing at the Asian Excellence Awards?

Se7en cancelled the scheduled performance last minute at the 2008 JCPenny Asian Excellence Awards in Los Angeles. Instead, he presented the Outstanding Film Actor award to Tony Leung. How Se7en like!

But Se7en must have a clear grasp of his status in the states by attending the D-list awards show. They nominated Maggie Q in Balls of Fury and Vanessa Hudgens in High School Musical 2 for Outstanding Film Actress. Rush Hour 3 was a nominee in the Outstanding Film category, and Rob Schneider was given the Half Asian Award!

The Asian Excellence Awards will air May 1st on E!.

Se7en performs at Highlands in Hollywood

American-crossover hopeful Se7en held his album preview party last night at the Hollywood club Highlands, where he performed three songs from his upcoming debut album.

In a nutshell? If you’re a Se7en fan, the event was probably a success because you got to see him performing up close and personal in a relatively small club atmosphere. No way you’d get this close in a performance in Korea, or Asia. Promotion-wise, the party was packed and people were screaming with excitement when Se7en took the stage, so another plus there.

    CLIP

    The scene:

Highlands is probably the perfect venue for an event like this; it’s a well-known and popular nightclub — though I wouldn’t exactly call it “world-famous” — and although there’s a decent Asian population amongst its clubgoers, it’s definitely not an “Asian-targeted” club (although you wouldn’t have been able to tell from the turnout last night). It also boasts equal parts swank (read: overpriced, watered-down drinks) and Hollywood pretentiousness (trendy, dolled-up patrons) to make it a high-profile event.

The attendees were, as expected, largely of Asian descent, and while a fair chunk of those were Koreans, most attendees were from the LA and OC area, although there were some die-hards who flew in across the country to make the night. If the party was indeed sold out — and it seemed so, what with the crowding and the super-strict guest list control — there were approximately 2,000 in attendance, going off the club’s listed capacity.

    The performances:

The biggest detractor was that entire night was super short. For an event that was promoted as certain to sell out and running from 10pm - 3am, all the action was crammed into less than one hour in the middle. Far East Movement took the stage at 11:50 and performed for about ten to fifteen minutes; Three 6 Mafia took over for a mere ten minutes. Se7en performed at 12:15; granted, it was a preview showcase, but for all the hype, it seemed pretty anticlimactic when everything was over by 12:30.

First, Se7en performed his first song of the night, “You Got Me Now,” with Three 6 Mafia (clip below).

Second was the song posted above, “Money Can’t Buy Me Love,” written by Teddy of onetime popular kpop group 1TYM. Se7en’s vocals came across the most in this song, as you can hear for yourself; it’s also the most melodically strong track (and the one I liked best).

Last was the song “Girls,” produced by “Darkchild” Rodney Jerkins, which was probably the weakest performance of the night. Sure, it’s to his credit that Se7en danced and sang live, but the backing vocal track was so predominant in “Girls” that it was more like he was performing karaoke over the recorded track. Most of his contribution to the song was a few breathy “Girls, girls” sung over the chorus while he gyrated with some dancers.

Se7en joins the American beef boycott

Koreans are up in arms about importing American beef due to fear of mad cow disease and Se7en is one of them. Despite the fact that he has been living off of American hamburgers for the last eighteen months, the singer expressed his disapproval of American beef by writing “Mad Cow? Give me a servant!” on his cyworld minihompy yesterday.

Hmm, may tanong lang ako. Should this be better merged with the K-pop/C-pop thread? Iniisip ko kasi if mas ok to dun kesa dito. He is not exactly hugely popular in Japan, and most of his music-related activities are in Korea and not in Japan. What do you think? ^_^
