    Akikawa Masafumi - opera tenor

Akikawa Masafumi First Classical Million Seller

The song "Sen no Kaze ni Natte" has made opera tenor Akikawa Masafumi (39) a household name. And now it has finally made him Japan's first classical artist to have a million-selling release, according to sales data from Oricon.

The song is based on an English poem by an unknown author called "Do not Stand at my Grave and Weep" and Akikawa's version was released in May 2006, with the Japanese translation and melody by Arai Man. But after he sang it on NHK's "Kohaku Utagassen" popular song concert last New Year's Eve, sales started to really pick up and Akikawa started popping up all over the place on TV.

It became the first classical recording to reach No.1 on Oricon's singles chart and was named the best-selling single for the first half of 2007. The song was most recently used as the closing theme for a two-night Fuji TV special adaptation of "Hadashi no Gen", the famous anti-war manga based on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

With the ongoing decline in CD sales, million-selling hits are becoming fewer and further between, with only one a year in the last four years, compared to 14 in 2000 and five in 2001.

nagulat ako nang makita kong siya yung No.1 sa singles chart ng Oricon.. 'sen no kaze ni natte' is a nice song to listen to naman kahit hindi ako mahilig sa ganung type ng music.

Akikawa MasafumiThe song "Sen no Kaze ni Natte", which made opera tenor Akikawa Masafumi (39) a household name, was named yesterday as the best-selling single of the year. It was the first classical recording to reach No.1 on Oricon's singles chart and Akikawa became Japan's first classical artist to have a million-selling release.

With over 1.1 million copies sold, it brought in ¥1.12 billion for Teichiku Entertainment. The song is based on an English poem by an unknown author called "Do not Stand at my Grave and Weep" and Akikawa's version was released in May 2006.

After he sang it on NHK's "Kohaku Utagassen" last New Year's Eve, sales started to really pick up and Akikawa started popping up all over the place on TV. He has performed more than 120 concerts this year and estimates that he has sung the song about 160 times.  Japan-zone.com

Ito ang major LSS ko ngayon. Grabe, ang galing niya sa Kouhaku, nakakakilabot nga lang pero magaling talaga. ^_^ Nakaka-touch pa ung letter na binasa ni Nakama Yukie before Akikawa-san sang the song.

Yoshiki, Akikawa team up for drama theme song

when i read this article... i was like, 'wow! o__O

    http://www.tokyograph.com/news/id-2734

Rock star Yoshiki and popular tenor Masafumi Akikawa have formed an unlikely combination to create the theme song for a two-part television drama set to air next week.

The drama is NTV's "Tokyo Daikushu," whose cast is led by Maki Horikita and Tatsuya Fujiwara. The drama, which airs on March 17-18, reportedly had a budget of 100 million yen.

The theme song is a currently untitled ballad written and composed by Yoshiki and sung by Akikawa. The two actually never met, as Yoshiki created the song while in Los Angeles. It was brought back to Japan, and Akikawa completed the recording in Tokyo on Monday.

Akikawa’s new album shows desire to broaden appeal

In a recent article on Daily Yomiuri, Sakurai Manabu wrote, “Tenor Masafumi Akikawa’s new album Sen no Kaze ni Natte: Ichigo Ichie was released Wednesday and includes the hit song “Sen no Kaze ni Natte” (a thousand winds)–which is so popular that it was sung at NHK’s Red and White Year-End Song Festival in both 2006 and 2007–as well as a variety of other popular songs.”

“The album includes such old hits as “Iyomante no Yoru,” written by Kazuo Kikuta, which is often sung at graduation ceremonies, Miyuki Nakajima’s “Chijyo no Hoshi,” Anzen-Chitai’s “Wine Red no Kokoro,” and Shinji Tanimura’s “Subaru.”

“Using his memorable voice, Akikawa sings those songs powerfully on the album.”

“Akikawa says he’s determined to sing these pop songs as a tenor and talks about the popular Italian song “O Solo Mio,” which, “Many people may think of as a song for opera singers, but originally it was a pop song. Yet the song has became popular worldwide thanks to the opera singers.” J!-Ent News
