There's English bread, German bread, and French bread but Japan's bread, Japan does not exist. In that case, there's no choice but to create it.

Yakitate!! Japan (焼きたて!! ジャぱん?, meaning "Freshly Baked!! Ja-pan", the "pan" also meaning "bread" in Japanese) is a manga, authored by Takashi Hashiguchi, serialized in Shogakukan's Shōnen Sunday, which has been adapted into a television anime series by Sunrise. The manga has spanned 25 tankōbon volumes, as of January, 2007, while the weekly serialization of the manga has ended as of January 10, 2007. The anime series, broadcast on TV Tokyo and other local stations from October 2004 to March 2006, spanned a total of 69 episodes. The series won the 2004 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga.[1] The manga series was later licensed by VIZ Media for North American distribution.[2]

The story focuses on Kazuma Azuma, a boy on his quest to create "Ja-pan", a national bread for Japan itself. He initially heads to Tokyo to expand his horizons at the bread-making chain Pantasia; the story continues with Azuma's exploits with his other coworkers.

The title of this series itself is a play on words; Yakitate translates to "freshly baked", but Japan has a double meaning. Besides referring to the country of Japan, pan is the Japanese word for "bread" (stemming from Portuguese pão[3]). Ja-pan is a pun for this series. This mimics the style of the names of other varieties of bread in Japanese, such as "furansupan" (French Bread), "doitsupan" (German rye-based bread), "itariapan" (Italian bread), etc.

Besides the desire to create his Ja-pan, Azuma also possesses the legendary Solar Hands (太陽の手, taiyō no te?). These hands are warmer than normal human hand temperature, and allow the dough to ferment faster. This gives him some advantage at the beginning of the series, but his innovation is his greater talent.

Although the story has baking as its main theme, the parts that generate the most interest are the outrageous puns in the story. Especially notable are the "reaction" based puns made by the judges, who go to great lengths to prove a single point about the bread that they had tasted. The series in general also pokes fun at the shōnen genre's tendency to be melodramatic over mundane tasks.

Characters

Azuma Kazuma

A young boy with Solar Hands and the story's main protagonist, Azuma is a delightful mix of optimistic, ignorant, and bread-making genius. When he was 6 years old, his sister Inaho took him to a bakery and gave him his first taste of real, well-made bread, and he fell in love with it. The owner of that bakery told Azuma of his dream to make Japan, a bread that would represent Japan, and Azuma now carries that dream on for the man, who has not been seen since. Azuma may not know the technical terms of what everything does or be as knowledgeable as Kuroyanagi or Kanmuri, but he knows what tastes good, has an excellent sense of what goes with what, and follows his feelings, which haven't let him down. He is a great friend to everyone and, most of the time, can be found in a happy, smiley mood.


Kawachi Kyosuke

Azuma's "rival", Kawachi is often jealous that Azuma has both Solar Hands and the talent for making a Japan no matter the situation. Kawachi's father had always dreamed of being a baker, but was never any good. Eventually, there was a fire in their apartment caused by the baking and Kawachi's father died, leaving Kawachi to care for his family as the 'man of the house'. Kawachi bakes not only because it brings in money to send to his mother and younger siblings, but also because he wants to live out his father's dream and become a great baker. He gets a bit emotional sometimes, and seems to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but he has a good heart and sticks by his friends through thick and thin. He's also the nominee for "most times hair style changes" in Yaki.

Tsukino Azusagawa

Distinguishing feature: Family issues
Tsukino is one of the three heirs to Pantasia after her grandfather retires, along with Yukino and Mizuno. Tsukino's mother died from cancer, and Yukino and Mizuno are the daughters of a different wife; therefore Yukino and Mizuno treat Tsukino like trash and don't respect her at all. Tsukino is the "manager's proxy" at the South Pantasia store. She juggles going to school with working at the store, is sweet to her friends, and dislikes conflict. She doesn't like gambling, but she has a lot of faith in her friends and employees.

Matsushiro Ken
Also known as: The Manager
Age: 32
Ethnicity: Japanese

Distinguishing feature: Afro
Ken is the manager of the Southern Pantasia store. He likes his hair, fighting, and horse racing, as well as making bread. Back when he was at his best, he was said to make the best French Bread in Japan. His little sister is allergic to milk products, and it almost cost her her life when she ate some of his bread, so he made it a point to make gread tasting bread that everyone could eat, allergies or not, and he created his own type of yeast to do so. He might come off a little strong, but it's really just tough love, as he encourages his employees to do their best and get "fired up", no matter what. He is old friends with Ryuu-san (they used to fight as a team together) and likes partying, drinking, and money.

Kuroyanagi Ryou

Age: 22

Distinguishing feature: Quick temper
Kuroyanagi attended school in the USA, where he skipped ahead through high-school (where he met his friend Brad Kid) quickly and graduated Harvard (where he met both Kanmuri, who was going through college at an even younger age than him, and his ex-girlfriend Cathy). Upon graduating, he came back to Japan and started working at Pantasia, flying up through the ranks to be a manager in only a few years. His temper is quick, and he dislikes lateness, uncleanliness, and people who don't have the knowledge necessary to make good bread. He himself is a genius, having memorized countless facts about everything bread-related. He likes bread, knowing about bread, his old girlfriend (and those who look like her), and looking cool while doing bread reactions.
Suwabara Kai
Also known as: Baldy, Samurai-Boy
Age: 19(?)
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: none known, sword-sensei
Distinguishing feature: Bandana
Suwabara is first introduced as a crossaint-making genius who is possibly the most promising young baker in Japan. When Azuma's crossaint topples his own, however, Suwabara vows he will get better, and constantly strives to make bread better than Azuma's Japan. He eventually creates his own 'line' of bread, called Lupan, using techniques he has stolen from all over the world. He likes his sword, training, making bread, and fighting with Kawachi (while they both call each other "Baldy"). He dislikes being defeated, messing up, and disgraceful people.

Kanmuri Shigeru
Also known as: ...genius boy?
Age: 16
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: none known
Distinguishing features: Vast knowledge, early graduation from Harvard
Kanmuri really wants nothing more than to have the funds necessary to continue his research on bread making and, in particular, yeast. This is why he is teamed up with Yukino when he is first introduced, since she is providing him with money in exchange for him winning the Pantasia newcomer's battle. He, like Kuroyanagi, attended Harvard, but graduated younger than Kuroyanagi, leaving Harvard when he was only 16. Kanmuri likes planning things, learning more about bread and bread-making, and experimenting with new ideas for bread-making. He strongly, strongly dislikes Yukino. (But then again, don't we all?)

Pierrot Bonnaz
Also known as: World Class Clown, Leol
Age: 22
Ethnicity: French
Family: parents (Leonhart XIV and wife), foster parents (abandoned), Quedam
Distinguishing feature: Ability to do pretty much everything
Pierrot was found in a circus tent by the Quedam ringmaster, Don, when he was very young. His parents forgot him, so Don decided to adopt him, and trained him as a performer. Pierrot grew up to be a great clown, but was always sad that his parents abandoned him and didn't come looking for him. He eventually became the ringmaster of Quedam when Don retired, and is able to make up to 150 copies of himself and speak 140 languages. He is a world-class gourmet, able to judge bread as simply as just looking at it or touching it. He likes bread-reactions, his old girlfriend Meg, and team Japan. He dislikes the fact that his parents abandoned him, the fact that Meg wouldn't go with him to Las Vegas, and terrorists who try to kill him.

Pierrot is Prince Leol, later Leonhart XV, and heir to the throne of Monaco. When Pierrot was born, the King decided that he should be raised by commoners. However, the foster parents that were chosen used the baby as a hostage and ran away with the money given to them (they later committed suicide abroad and abandoned Pierrot at the circus). He recently discovered that the King is his father, just before the King's heroic death, but is still sad that he wasn't able to speak with his parents before they died...

Mokoyama Tsuyoshi
Also known as: "that way"
Age: 32

Distinguishing feature: Being "that way"
Mokoyama is the manager at the St. Pierre main store, located across the street from the Southern Pantasia store. He loves to be flashy and put on shows, getting his nails/hair done, and "Ken-chan". Once he stops working at St. Pierre's (read: is fired), he shows up in the Pantasia newcomer's battle as "Koala" to fight against Azuma. Because he is "that way", he also has the ability to braid bread together to create dragon scales. After the battle with Azuma, he realizes that he has lost the part of him that just wanted to create great bread, and goes off to re-discover the joy of baking.

Yukino Azusagawa
Also known as: crazy b*tch (pardon our French)
Age: 20s
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: father, mother, Mizuno, Tsukino
Distinguishing features: Cruelty, hate of cockroaches
Yukino is the oldest Azusagawa sister, and by far the meanest. She'll stop at nothing to make sure that Pantasia is hers, including having people killed and sabotaging anything that comes within her reach. She likes to be sickly sweet when in the presence of her grandfather, the press, or large groups of people, but reverts to herself when alone or with people who she's ordering around. She's currently sleeping with Kirisaki Yuuichi, the owner of St. Pierre's, and they're working together to plot the downfall of Pantasia. She hates losing, people who mess up her plans, and cockroaches.

Mizuno Azusagawa
Also known as: "the kid"
Age: early teens
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: father, mother, Yukino, Tsukino
Distinguishing feature: Ability to act like a baby koala
Mizuno is the youngest of the Azusagawa sisters, and makes her first appearance in the Pantasia newcomer's battle. Though young, she is also a manager's proxy like Tsukino, and specializes in making melon-bread. She doesn't hate Tsukino quite as much as Yukino hates Tsukino, but still strongly dislikes her. When she loses the newcomer's battle, Azuma makes her refer to Tsukino in a kinder fashion, rather than making fun of Tsukino by calling her "Tsukino-neechan". She seems fickle and almost lets Koala walk out after firing him, but has some heart and realizes that he's a good employee and runs after him.

Meister Kirisaki
Also known as: Meister GM, Silvian
Age: late 20s - early 30s
Ethnicity: Japanese/French
Family: father (Yuuichi), sister (Sophie), mother (deceased)
Distinguishing features: Titanium face-mask, bird feathers
The Meister is the highest-ranking person at Pantasia, the General Manager. He is an excellent bread artisan and a gourmet judge. He has a pet peacock named Coo. His sister Sophie lives in France and takes care of the bakery that their foster father had owned. His real father (Yuuichi) left the family as soon as his mother got pregnant with Sophie, and only came back to taunt the hungry children after their mother died. The Meister doesn't like appearing in public, but likes Azuma and the SoPantasia store workers, admiring them for their work ethic and morale.

Kinoshita Kageto
Also known as: Mushroom Head
Age: early 20s
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: extended circus-family
Distinguishing features: Ability to perform multiple jobs at once
Kino is the quietest, least-known member of the Southern Pantasia store team. He can most always be found hurrying around the store while the others are out, doing everything that needs to be done. He first appears to help Azuma out of the freezer on Azuma and Kawachi's first day of work. Kino likes Tsukino and baking, and he hates being the only one in the store that actually works. He comes from a famous circus family, the Kinoshita circus, which explains why he is able to make multiple copies of himself to do the different tasks in the store. His talent for baking is that he is able to make a copy of any bread he has seen or tasted with only slight differences (the main difference being that it's never quite as good as the original).

Kirisaki Yuuichi
Also known as: St. Pierre's Owner
Age: 30s-40s
Ethnicity: Japanese
Family: wife (deceased), children (Silvian and Sophie)
Distinguishing features: Shady-ness, literally
Yuuichi is the cruel, manipulative, plotting owner of St. Pierre's. He once was a baker, but gave up his dream. He is a good friend of the King of the Monaco Cup (having trained him when the King was very young), and had a family that he abandoned in France. He is currently both sleeping and plotting with Yukino to ensure the downfall of Pantasia. He has no problems killing people who don't carry out his plans as he sees fit, and has so many connections it's almost scary.

* In one chapter, Ryo Kuroyanagi comments on the use of yellowtail, which then triggers a memory of the manga Konjiki No Gash Bell, where Kuroyanagi then takes a hose to “wash” the yellowtail before Zatch eats it. Takashi Hashiguchi then through the manga congratulates Konjiki No Gash Bell’s becoming of an anime.

* Along with the Zatch Bell! manga, the series includes references to Hunter X Hunter (Pierrot personage comes after Hisoka), Saiyuki (one of Kawachi's competitors in early series using Hakkai's ball of light techniques in illusionary fight), among others.

* In the episode 13, at the Pantasia's Newcomer Battle Azuma was making Japan 58, Melon Sushi Pan. The bread was made by baking the cookie dough and the bread dough separately and later combined together with melon juice in the middle acting like wasabi in sushi. Azuma combined them together in front of Kuroyanagi before he judged the bread. After he put some melon juice on the bread, he held the bread in his left hand then dramatically combined it with the cookie in his right hand while shouting, "Gattai" (combined). This is probably a reference to "Hyōi Gattai" or "Oversoul" in Shaman King, The move was done very similarly to Yoh Asakura's "Oversoul".

* Japan #44, which is the best Japan made prior to the story, will make anyone who eat it goes to heaven. 44 was read Yonju yon in Japanese, but if we read it number by number as in 4-4, it will read as shi-shi. Shi is a homophone to a same word meaning "death" in Japanese. That's also why number 4 in Japan is considered as a bad luck number, similar to Western number 13. With that taken into account, Japan #44 can be loosely described as "Bread of death that sends people to heaven". (See tetraphobia)

* In Episode 17, there is a parody of Gamera where Ryo ate Kazuma's turtle bread and began spinning in midair furiously along with breathing out fire from his mouth, much like how Gamera does when flying. When Ken made mention of this, Kyosuke asked if it is legal to show Gamera without getting sued.

* In Episode 25, during Kawachi's afro training, there's a parody of the famous novel, drama and movie Sekachu, where Kawachi has a reaction and appears on top of a bread whose crust looks a bit like the Ayers Rock (this reasoning is backed up by the fact that there are kangaroos on the crust), shouting "Afro no chushin de ai wo sakebi" ("Crying out love in the center of the afro").

* Also, in episode 25 there is a scene of Kawachi watching Yakitate!! Japan on television, to which he says "This anime is really good". In another episode, Kazuma claims that Japan #2 is so simple that the show's seiyū can bake it to which Tsukino comments that the producers were very useless in cooking.

* Episode 29 includes a Gundam parody, featuring the Black Tri-Stars and their traditional MS-09 Dom mobile suits, as well as the Nobel Gundam from G-Gundam, piloted by Yukino, who appears to be wearing the uniform of Sayla Mass. The parody was so elaborate that a disclaimer was displayed assuring the viewer that the show was still, in fact, Yakitate!! Japan.

* Suwabara's LuPan refers to Arsène Lupin, for he is "stealing" techniques from other techniques and style.

* In the anime, the event in the Monaco cup arc where all the contestants are left in an island is similar to Survivor.

* In the anime, at the Monaco Cup arc, Kawachi and Suwabara were left to die in a burning forest but are saved the Pharaoh of the Egyptian team, the way they dodge him is similar to The Matrix's bullet time.

* During the Monaco cup, Pierot responds to the Japanese's team's disbelief that they will be graded extremely hard due to their use of a microwave oven by attacking the oven with super-fast punchs while saying "pero pero pero pero" rapidly, much in the same style Kujo Jotaro uses in the anime and manga "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure", although Jojo sais "Ora" rather than "Pero".

* In episode 43 of the anime, after Pierrot puts nori on Kawachi's head, he remakes Kawachi's head again, this time making him look like Isono Namihei in the anime/manga Sazae-san, and the rock-paper-scissors thing he does is what Isono does at the end of each episode of Sazae-san

* Pierrot's discussion of his time with the Saltimpanco circus and mentions the old Quedam circus in the anime is a reference to the Cirque du Soleil shows Saltimbanco and Quidam.

* Episode 44 contains both parodies of Initial D and Michael Schumacher, and also of Doraemon.

* The surgeon that appears in Chapter 78 is a parody of Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack, completed with scars and scrubs. In episode 26, in a flashback, Ryuo claimed that his old friend once donated his lungs to him when he had pneumonia. His friend entered the room dressed as Black Jack, claiming that Ryo's lying.

* In episode 48/chapter 108, there is a parody of Detective Conan where Pierrot disguises himself as Conan for his reaction. In the manga, Kawachi (standing in for the mangaka) also used said opportunity to bash Conan, by saying Conan (his mangaka) has a huge ego.

* In chapter 118, there is a parody of Galaxy Express 999 when Pierrot goes to outer space for his reaction. In this reaction, Pierrot became a child, possibly taking on the role of Giovanni from Night on the Galactic Railroad.
o Possibly due to licensing issues, in anime episode 51, they instead refer to Night on the Galactic Railroad by Miyazawa Kenji; in fact, they explicitly stated it is not the world of 999.

* The theme song for the "Yakitate!! 9" competition in the last arc of the anime sounds surprisingly similar to a mix of the chorus of O-Zone's Dragostea din tei and Dschinghis Khan's Moskau, both very popular songs at the time of the episodes thanks to the Internet and Internet memes.

* In episode 53, as a reaction to one of Yūichi's Go-pans, the show produces a parody of itself, whereupon the opening introduction to Yakitate!! Japan is replayed with all the major plot devices changed: Azuma turns into an American boy with blonde hair and glasses that wants to create an American rice dish called "Gohan." His name is changed to Tom Crusoe (an obvious reference to Tom Cruise), and, instead of Solar Hands, he possesses the legendary "North Pole Hands." They even go so far as to show the first couple of scenes of the "episode", complete with the introductory title screen read by "Tom", and even a "Seed of Knowledge" section at the end. The sequence is an almost exact replica of episode 1 of the series, only with many skipped scenes, and different character names and appearances. The end of the sequence reveals that the name of this obviously made up series is "Takitate!! Gohan", meaning "Freshly Boiled!! Gohan", with Gohan referring to boiled rice. It was based on omake 2 of the manga. Also, in a later addition of Takitate!! Gohan, the test examiner for Tom Crusoe’s test, just as Kuroyanagi does in the second chapter, eliminates 3 students. However in Takitate!! Gohan, these students happen to be Azuma, Suwabara, and Kawachi. In later chapters of Yakitate!! Japan, Kinoshita makes references to Takitate!! Gohan out loud.

* In episode 55, there is a parody of Dragonball Z where Kuroyanagi and Kawachi became Super Kuroyanagi (Super Saiyan) and Freezer, respectively, as a reaction from trying Takumi Tsubozuka's Super Toro Aburi bread. Kuroyanagi then later turns into Super Kuroyanagi Two and Super Kuroyanagi Three after trying Azuma's Urchin-roe Chawanmushi bread. Later when Takumi ate Azuma bread, he transform into Kitaro from GeGeGe no Kitaro including needle for hairs which injures Kawachi and Kuroyanagi.

* In episode 56, there is a parody of One Piece where Kuroyanagi turns into a "Tenobi Man" as a reaction from trying Azuma's Japanese-Style Ja-pan dumpling. To this effect, he dons a straw hat and starts stretching his arms like rubber to unbelievable lengths a la Monkey D. Luffy.

* Tesshō Iwashiro and Dog, from the manga Wild Life, make a minor appearance in episode 38 (replacing Dr. Blackjack) and a longer appearance in episode 58. He also appeared in Chapter 208.

* In episode 59, there is a parody of Naruto where Kawachi (imitating Naruto) and Suwabara (imitating Sasuke) are fighting using various parodied techniques.

* In episode 63, there's a parody of Pepsiman where Kawachi becomes Pepmiman as a reaction.

* In episode 63, Miki Norihei is dressed to resemble Freddie Mercury.

* In episode 64, a look-alike of the famous video game character Karnov can be seen amongst the people in the crowd, calling himself "Shimaki".

* Also in episode 64, when Kuroyanagi's reaction produces 16 Shima's, a silhouette of Joe Shimamura from Cyborg 009 can be seen.

* Lastly, in episode 64 there were parodies of many famous paintings including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Edvard Munch's The Scream during Kuroyanagi's reaction to Norihei's bread.

* In another episode, Kuroyanagi refers to the series Zatch Bell! as a reaction.[citation needed]

* Episode 68 is a Lord of the Rings parody, with some elements taken from The Chronicles of Narnia as well. This episode is also heavily influenced by video game series The Legend of Zelda. One example is the clothing and appearance of Tsukino, which is reminiscent of that of princess Zelda's. The magical loquat is a clear reference to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, as they both have similar appearances as well as certain characteristics (the loquat is able to grant wishes and is a malevolent entity). Also the pig-like creatures attacking Golem are similar to those of the game series.

* In Episode 68, the final battle between Azuma and Yukino (Inside Kuroyanagi's Reaction), Azuma and the Magical Loquat take on an appearance very similar to Kazuma's final alter from s-CRY-ed. The similarity is most noticeable from the chest and facial armor that appears on Azuma. There is also obviously a connection since they share the name Kazuma.

* In the last episode, episode 69, there is a boy in the crowd who bears a slight resemblance to Red of Pokémon fame (or perhaps Ash Ketchum from series one of the anime), complete with a white-on-red trucker hat.

* Also, in the last episode, where Pierrot comes, his scene entrance is similar to Ultraman's transformation.

* Chapter 178 is a Journey to the West parody, with Kuroyanagi as Xuanzang, Azuma as Sun Wukong, Kawachi as Sha Wujing, Kanmuri as Xuanzang's horse, and Katsuo as Zhu Bajie. The plotline is based on when Zhu Bajie first appeared. During the battle that occurs in chapter 179, Dragonball Z is also parodied, with Kawachi going into Super Saiyan mode and using the Spirit Bomb ("Trust Ball" in this case) against Katsuo.

* In chapter 235, Kawachi transformed into Chopin.

* In chapter 242 (Finale), Kawachi transformed into Dhalsim.

* In Chapter 208 the vet heavily resembles Tesshō from Wild Life (manga)

* Yuichi Kirisaki, one of the series' main antagonists, bears a striking resemblance to Gendou Ikari of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The two happen to have the same voice actor, Fumihiko Tachiki.

* In one chapter, Ryo Kuroyanagi comments on the use of yellowtail, which then triggers a memory of the manga Konjiki No Gash Bell, where Kuroyanagi then takes a hose to “wash” the yellowtail before Zatch eats it. Takashi Hashiguchi then through the manga congratulates Konjiki No Gash Bell’s becoming of an anime.

* Along with the Zatch Bell! manga, the series includes references to Hunter X Hunter (Pierrot personage comes after Hisoka), Saiyuki (one of Kawachi's competitors in early series using Hakkai's ball of light techniques in illusionary fight), among others.

* In the episode 13, at the Pantasia's Newcomer Battle Azuma was making Japan 58, Melon Sushi Pan. The bread was made by baking the cookie dough and the bread dough separately and later combined together with melon juice in the middle acting like wasabi in sushi. Azuma combined them together in front of Kuroyanagi before he judged the bread. After he put some melon juice on the bread, he held the bread in his left hand then dramatically combined it with the cookie in his right hand while shouting, "Gattai" (combined). This is probably a reference to "Hyōi Gattai" or "Oversoul" in Shaman King, The move was done very similarly to Yoh Asakura's "Oversoul".

* Japan #44, which is the best Japan made prior to the story, will make anyone who eat it goes to heaven. 44 was read Yonju yon in Japanese, but if we read it number by number as in 4-4, it will read as shi-shi. Shi is a homophone to a same word meaning "death" in Japanese. That's also why number 4 in Japan is considered as a bad luck number, similar to Western number 13. With that taken into account, Japan #44 can be loosely described as "Bread of death that sends people to heaven". (See tetraphobia)

* In Episode 17, there is a parody of Gamera where Ryo ate Kazuma's turtle bread and began spinning in midair furiously along with breathing out fire from his mouth, much like how Gamera does when flying. When Ken made mention of this, Kyosuke asked if it is legal to show Gamera without getting sued.

* In Episode 25, during Kawachi's afro training, there's a parody of the famous novel, drama and movie Sekachu, where Kawachi has a reaction and appears on top of a bread whose crust looks a bit like the Ayers Rock (this reasoning is backed up by the fact that there are kangaroos on the crust), shouting "Afro no chushin de ai wo sakebi" ("Crying out love in the center of the afro").

* Also, in episode 25 there is a scene of Kawachi watching Yakitate!! Japan on television, to which he says "This anime is really good". In another episode, Kazuma claims that Japan #2 is so simple that the show's seiyū can bake it to which Tsukino comments that the producers were very useless in cooking.

* Episode 29 includes a Gundam parody, featuring the Black Tri-Stars and their traditional MS-09 Dom mobile suits, as well as the Nobel Gundam from G-Gundam, piloted by Yukino, who appears to be wearing the uniform of Sayla Mass. The parody was so elaborate that a disclaimer was displayed assuring the viewer that the show was still, in fact, Yakitate!! Japan.

* Suwabara's LuPan refers to Arsène Lupin, for he is "stealing" techniques from other techniques and style.

* In the anime, the event in the Monaco cup arc where all the contestants are left in an island is similar to Survivor.

* In the anime, at the Monaco Cup arc, Kawachi and Suwabara were left to die in a burning forest but are saved the Pharaoh of the Egyptian team, the way they dodge him is similar to The Matrix's bullet time.

* During the Monaco cup, Pierot responds to the Japanese's team's disbelief that they will be graded extremely hard due to their use of a microwave oven by attacking the oven with super-fast punchs while saying "pero pero pero pero" rapidly, much in the same style Kujo Jotaro uses in the anime and manga "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure", although Jojo sais "Ora" rather than "Pero".

* In episode 43 of the anime, after Pierrot puts nori on Kawachi's head, he remakes Kawachi's head again, this time making him look like Isono Namihei in the anime/manga Sazae-san, and the rock-paper-scissors thing he does is what Isono does at the end of each episode of Sazae-san

* Pierrot's discussion of his time with the Saltimpanco circus and mentions the old Quedam circus in the anime is a reference to the Cirque du Soleil shows Saltimbanco and Quidam.

* Episode 44 contains both parodies of Initial D and Michael Schumacher, and also of Doraemon.

* The surgeon that appears in Chapter 78 is a parody of Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack, completed with scars and scrubs. In episode 26, in a flashback, Ryuo claimed that his old friend once donated his lungs to him when he had pneumonia. His friend entered the room dressed as Black Jack, claiming that Ryo's lying.

* In episode 48/chapter 108, there is a parody of Detective Conan where Pierrot disguises himself as Conan for his reaction. In the manga, Kawachi (standing in for the mangaka) also used said opportunity to bash Conan, by saying Conan (his mangaka) has a huge ego.

* In chapter 118, there is a parody of Galaxy Express 999 when Pierrot goes to outer space for his reaction. In this reaction, Pierrot became a child, possibly taking on the role of Giovanni from Night on the Galactic Railroad.
o Possibly due to licensing issues, in anime episode 51, they instead refer to Night on the Galactic Railroad by Miyazawa Kenji; in fact, they explicitly stated it is not the world of 999.

* The theme song for the "Yakitate!! 9" competition in the last arc of the anime sounds surprisingly similar to a mix of the chorus of O-Zone's Dragostea din tei and Dschinghis Khan's Moskau, both very popular songs at the time of the episodes thanks to the Internet and Internet memes.

* In episode 53, as a reaction to one of Yūichi's Go-pans, the show produces a parody of itself, whereupon the opening introduction to Yakitate!! Japan is replayed with all the major plot devices changed: Azuma turns into an American boy with blonde hair and glasses that wants to create an American rice dish called "Gohan." His name is changed to Tom Crusoe (an obvious reference to Tom Cruise), and, instead of Solar Hands, he possesses the legendary "North Pole Hands." They even go so far as to show the first couple of scenes of the "episode", complete with the introductory title screen read by "Tom", and even a "Seed of Knowledge" section at the end. The sequence is an almost exact replica of episode 1 of the series, only with many skipped scenes, and different character names and appearances. The end of the sequence reveals that the name of this obviously made up series is "Takitate!! Gohan", meaning "Freshly Boiled!! Gohan", with Gohan referring to boiled rice. It was based on omake 2 of the manga. Also, in a later addition of Takitate!! Gohan, the test examiner for Tom Crusoe’s test, just as Kuroyanagi does in the second chapter, eliminates 3 students. However in Takitate!! Gohan, these students happen to be Azuma, Suwabara, and Kawachi. In later chapters of Yakitate!! Japan, Kinoshita makes references to Takitate!! Gohan out loud.

* In episode 55, there is a parody of Dragonball Z where Kuroyanagi and Kawachi became Super Kuroyanagi (Super Saiyan) and Freezer, respectively, as a reaction from trying Takumi Tsubozuka's Super Toro Aburi bread. Kuroyanagi then later turns into Super Kuroyanagi Two and Super Kuroyanagi Three after trying Azuma's Urchin-roe Chawanmushi bread. Later when Takumi ate Azuma bread, he transform into Kitaro from GeGeGe no Kitaro including needle for hairs which injures Kawachi and Kuroyanagi.

* In episode 56, there is a parody of One Piece where Kuroyanagi turns into a "Tenobi Man" as a reaction from trying Azuma's Japanese-Style Ja-pan dumpling. To this effect, he dons a straw hat and starts stretching his arms like rubber to unbelievable lengths a la Monkey D. Luffy.

* Tesshō Iwashiro and Dog, from the manga Wild Life, make a minor appearance in episode 38 (replacing Dr. Blackjack) and a longer appearance in episode 58. He also appeared in Chapter 208.

* In episode 59, there is a parody of Naruto where Kawachi (imitating Naruto) and Suwabara (imitating Sasuke) are fighting using various parodied techniques.

* In episode 63, there's a parody of Pepsiman where Kawachi becomes Pepmiman as a reaction.

* In episode 63, Miki Norihei is dressed to resemble Freddie Mercury.

* In episode 64, a look-alike of the famous video game character Karnov can be seen amongst the people in the crowd, calling himself "Shimaki".

* Also in episode 64, when Kuroyanagi's reaction produces 16 Shima's, a silhouette of Joe Shimamura from Cyborg 009 can be seen.

* Lastly, in episode 64 there were parodies of many famous paintings including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Edvard Munch's The Scream during Kuroyanagi's reaction to Norihei's bread.

* In another episode, Kuroyanagi refers to the series Zatch Bell! as a reaction.[citation needed]

* Episode 68 is a Lord of the Rings parody, with some elements taken from The Chronicles of Narnia as well. This episode is also heavily influenced by video game series The Legend of Zelda. One example is the clothing and appearance of Tsukino, which is reminiscent of that of princess Zelda's. The magical loquat is a clear reference to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, as they both have similar appearances as well as certain characteristics (the loquat is able to grant wishes and is a malevolent entity). Also the pig-like creatures attacking Golem are similar to those of the game series.

* In Episode 68, the final battle between Azuma and Yukino (Inside Kuroyanagi's Reaction), Azuma and the Magical Loquat take on an appearance very similar to Kazuma's final alter from s-CRY-ed. The similarity is most noticeable from the chest and facial armor that appears on Azuma. There is also obviously a connection since they share the name Kazuma.

* In the last episode, episode 69, there is a boy in the crowd who bears a slight resemblance to Red of Pokémon fame (or perhaps Ash Ketchum from series one of the anime), complete with a white-on-red trucker hat.

* Also, in the last episode, where Pierrot comes, his scene entrance is similar to Ultraman's transformation.

* Chapter 178 is a Journey to the West parody, with Kuroyanagi as Xuanzang, Azuma as Sun Wukong, Kawachi as Sha Wujing, Kanmuri as Xuanzang's horse, and Katsuo as Zhu Bajie. The plotline is based on when Zhu Bajie first appeared. During the battle that occurs in chapter 179, Dragonball Z is also parodied, with Kawachi going into Super Saiyan mode and using the Spirit Bomb ("Trust Ball" in this case) against Katsuo.

* In chapter 235, Kawachi transformed into Chopin.

* In chapter 242 (Finale), Kawachi transformed into Dhalsim.

* In Chapter 208 the vet heavily resembles Tesshō from Wild Life (manga)
