Naruto is a manga by Masashi Kishimoto with an anime TV series adaptation. Its main character, Naruto Uzumaki, is a loud, hyperactive, adolescent ninja who constantly searches for approval and recognition, as well as to become Hokage, who is acknowledged as the best ninja in the village.
The manga was first published in Japan, by Shueisha, in the 43rd issue of the Shonen Jump magazine in 1999. VIZ Media publishes a translated version in the American Shonen Jump, and has translated roughly a third of the series. Naruto has become VIZ Media's best-selling manga series.

Twelve years before the start of the series, a Kyuubi (nine-tailed fox demon) attacked the Hidden Leaf Village. A swing of one of it's mighty tails could raise tsunamis and flatten mountains, chaos reigned throughout the village as it killed many people, until the leader of the Leaf, the Fourth Hokage, defeated it by sacrificing his own life to seal the demon inside a new born child, that child is Uzumaki Naruto. The Fourth Hokage would forever be celebrated as a hero for sealing the Kyuubi and saving the entire village. It was his wish that Naruto would also be respected in the same way he would be, however, this was not the case. Everybody in the village avoided Naruto, regarding him as nothing more than the evil demon fox. The Third Hokage made it a rule within the village that other villagers were forbidden from mentioning this event to anyone, even their own children, however because of the way their parents treated Naruto, they mistreated him as well throughout most of his childhood.
As a result of this Naruto grew up as a lonesome orphan, without friends, family, or acknowledgement of any sort. Nobody would pay any attention to him, so he sought attention in the only way he knew how, through pranks and mischief. However, Naruto's behaviour would come to change after graduating from the Ninja Academy by learning the technique of the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu to save his sensei Umino Iruka from certain death. Naruto learnt two things that day, that the Kyuubi was contained inside him, and that there was someone who cared about him, and understood how he felt. His graduation would become a changing moment and define his world for the rest of his life.

Nangyari yung isolation during the Tokugawa Ieyasu period. (You can watch Shinobi the Movie starring Joe Odagiri and Yukie Nakama-Yankumi of Gokusen-if you want to know a little history about the Shinobis).

Hmmmm.... I didn't know that the Shinobis are real. I thought it was only pure fiction. 8-)

@ jodan ja nai: Shinobi is another term for Ninja. :) They are also known as shinobi-no-mono.
@ Wigent: I'm not sure if there are other kinds of Ninja. Ang naiisip ko lang kasi ay clans. Like Iga and Koga :p Meron pa rin lahi ng Iga and Koga ang natitira ngayon. Yung ninja schools nila nasa Iga Ueno (Mie-ken) and Koga school is in Shiga-ken. :)
@ oda_do: May kulang ka sa pic mo...Wala kang yosi!! :p

:) Do as Asuma 2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/deadpan_do/do_asuma0022copy.jpg)

Nice angle, oda_do.
Actually, shinobi is the practice of "dark" art of improving your skill. I quoted dark because this is how they refer to it even before those times and I think until now. But the word dark I think wouldn't relate to something evil as most people during and before the Tokugawa period referred to.
Dark would mean something mysterious or unknown (and people would always relate these two words to evil [^o)]). Their practice of shinobi has led them to develop supernatural powers--jumping high, disappearing quickly, quicker reflexes, and other unbelievable techniques.
Because they practice this shinobi they were eventually/practically called Shinobi Ninjas.

@ oda_do: Haha! Sakto pati facial expression. :D
Thanks for the lecture about Ninja levels. Very informative! Dati kasi, exclusive lang akong nagbabasa about samurai el.
@ Wigent: Good analysis! :Y I will have to find that link to the article about the law that was passed to protect the ninja image. Kasi nga naman, sa popular media, ninjas have been portrayed as evil people, when in fact, they are warriors too, just like the samurai. :)

maneki_neko, thanks a lot for the info about Shinobi & Ninja being the same. :Y
Question: Can we use the said terms interchangeably? [8-|][I]

This won't be possible if not all Ninjas practice Shinobi.

Would you prefer using one over the other? I don't think there should be a problem with the use. But in more general/popular terms, ninja is more commonly used. I mean, using shinobi for someone not familiar with the term might give you a blank stare.
In the movie Shinobi - Heart under Blade, the English subtitle for shinobi was ninja, ifI remember correctly.:)

this is also the case for most of the naruto episodes i've watched, where shinobi was subbed with ninja...

So in this case, I guess it's for practical reasons rather than giving the exact translation. For viewers to understand, the translators of the shows directly translated Ninja for Shinobi for easier comprehension. But the truth is, not all Ninjas practice Shinobi-ism and if this were the case then not all Ninjas can be called Shinobis.
Is this correct?

I think Ninja isthe same as Shinobi. Shinobi no mono, when written in Kanji, is ???. Ninja, in Kanji is ??.Nawala lang ang 'no'. Both refer to people who practice ninjutsu, ??. :)
